Study from Deloitte | Global Powers of Retailing 2019

Deloitte’s latest “Global Powers of Retailing 2019” study has listed the 250 top-selling retail companies for the 22nd time.

With total revenues of USD 4.53 trillion, the top 250 retailers posted a respectable 5.7% growth in revenues in fiscal year 2017. According to the study, however, the global economy is at a turning point. In 2018, growth in important markets, such as Europe and China, slowed noticeably. This trend is set to continue in 2019.

Internationally, U.S. retailer Walmart Inc. remains in first place with sales of USD 550.3 billion. U.S. companies Costco Wholesale Corporation and The Kroger Co. continue to occupy second and third places respectively. In fourth place, Amazon has improved its ranking position by two places and is, thus, representative of the strong development of online trade.

Overall, Europe dominates the ranking with 87 companies. Retailers based in Germany, the UK, and France are particularly strongly represented. The top 10 places, on the other hand, continue to be dominated by U.S. companies.

One crisis follows the next. While retailers faced nationwide lockdowns, restrictions based on testing, vaccination, or recovery, and already disrupted supply chains last year, the war in Ukraine is bringing the issue of “consumer pricing” to the forefront. Additionally, supply chain disruptions and record energy prices are leading to unseen inflation rates in many European countries for several decades.
