Muji Expands into Switzerland – First store at Glattzentrum

The Muji retail chain, which is worth billions, is opening its first branch in Zurich next autumn.

The retail chain has announced that it will open its first store at Glattzentrum in Zurich. In 1980, Muji was launched as the private label of the Japanese Seibu department store chain.

Three years later, the first branch was opened in Tokyo, and, in 1990, the company became completely independent of the Seibu Group. One year later, the company expanded into Europe, where the first store was opened in London.

Muji now has approximately 800 stores in over 25 countries and generates an average annual turnover of 3.5 billion euros. The name Muji is the short form of Mujirushi Ryohin, which translates to: «No brand, good products».

“Consumer Trends – Do You Know the Latest Ones?”

The events of the last few years, increased transparency in general, and last but not least, technology and globalization have resulted in a new kind of customer. These new customers are both mature and competent. Retailers would do well to regard them as such.

Togetherness: A Silver Lining for Retail Spaces

In order to become the “center of the community”, retail spaces have to offer public services that people want and need, as well as opportunities for people to come together and build community. That entails, among other things, rethinking the tenant mix to generate footfall as well as creating more events and activities that attract people.
