Mott MacDonald working on second phase of The Glass Works, UK

Mott MacDonald is working on the second phase of The Glass Works, Barnsley’s £120 million retail and leisure development, on behalf of Barnsley Council.

Previously known as Better Barnsley, the scheme will provide a modern retail and leisure destination which also complements the traditions of Barnsley’s historic markets.

The scheme is being delivered over two phases. The first phase, which is already underway, includes the significant extension and refurbishment of a multi-storey precinct and market hall, a series of new retail units, a central library and community space and public realm works to create a new public square. Phase two will comprise a new-build development and offer additional retail, restaurant and leisure space, a 13-screen multiplex cinema and extensive multi-storey car parking.

Mott MacDonald has been providing civil, structural, highway, geotechnical, fire, acoustic, BREEAM and ecology design services during the project’s first phase. The consultancy is now offering similar services on phase two. IBI Group is acting as architect on The Glass Works.

Neil Thornber, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “A key aspect of the project’s success so far has been the close working relationship between ourselves and the client, architect and wider project team. This includes our collective ability to respond quickly and regularly to external market influences and changes resulting from public consultations, which are very important to the council.”

“It is envisaged that the scheme will attract significant investment into the borough. It will also boost economic growth and create approximately 800 new jobs in the retail and leisure industries, as well as temporary construction jobs while it is built,” Neil added.

The Glass Works is scheduled to be completed in summer 2020.
