IKEA opens a large city department store in Gallerian, Stockholm

Gallerian, Sweden's first mall located in the city center of Stockholm, has attracted visitors for shopping, experiences and meetings since its inauguration in 1976. IKEA has furnished Swedish homes since the 50s. In the summer of 2022, they will meet when IKEA opens a large city department store on four floors and just over 8,000 square meters in the southern part of Gallerian.

As restrictions ease in the wake of the pandemic, several new initiatives for future retail see the light of day. Another is officially announced today. In 2022, IKEA Sweden will open a city department store in Gallerian, the first department store of its kind in Sweden. According to IKEA Sweden, the establishment is part of a larger investment in Stockholm. The new store will be an important milestone in Gallerian’s history.

– This is fantastic news that we have been looking forward to announce for some time. Gallerian, which since the start has been a popular and versatile trading and meeting place, now welcomes one of Sweden’s most appreciated and popular brands. We are very proud that IKEA chooses to open in Gallerian, says Cecilia Åkesson, center manager.

The department store will include over 8,000 square meters of inspiration and furniture spread over four floors, three of which are open to customers. Here customers will be able to buy a large assortment of home furnishing products and receive personal service from home furnishing experts. The store will make it easier for customers to find more sustainable products and solutions. In the department store, there will also be a department only for second-hand furniture. Through the new restaurant concept Swedish Deli, it will also be possible to try the dining experience that many associate with IKEA.

– The fact that IKEA is moving into the Gallerian is a historic investment that can be seen as a sign of the city’s awakening after the pandemic’s slumber. Many have longed to meet and interact with people again and to feel the pulse that exists in city centers. With this and other establishments, we breathe new life into the city together and I am convinced that it will make more people rediscover both what Stockholm city and Gallerian have to offer, says Mats Hederos, CEO of AMF Fastigheter.

AMF Fastigheter’s development of the new city district Urban Escape and the transformation of the new Gallerian has meant a major change, not only of the location but also of the city. The mall today is a central part of the vision to create a vibrant city district between Hamngatan, Regeringsgatan and Brunkebergstorg. IKEA’s establishment further contributes to that vision and is a testament to the city’s and Gallerian’s appeal.

The inauguration of IKEA’s new city investment is planned for the summer of 2022. The department store will be located in the southern part of the Gallery with shop windows facing Jakobsgatan and Regeringsgatan.
